Engineering First Semester: What Students Should Focus On

Academic priorities
- Attend classes: 75% attendance is mandatory in most TN universities. Below this, you cannot write exams. Missing early classes creates a hole that is hard to recover.
- Do not skip lab sessions: Lab marks contribute to internal marks and records. Missed labs are often not repeated.
- Do not wait for exam month to study: Engineering subjects accumulate. A chapter you do not understand in Week 2 will affect Week 8 material.
Building good habits
- Maintain a personal timetable — not rigid, but structured
- Form a study group of 3-4 serious students (not a distraction group)
- Start assignments on the day they are given, not the day before submission
Social adjustment
- Ragging exists — know your rights (see anti-ragging guide)
- Take time to find genuine friends — do not rush to fit into every group
- If you feel isolated or depressed: talk to family, counsellor, or the college student welfare office
Common first-semester mistake
Many students take it easy in first semester thinking it does not count much. First semester arrears (failed subjects) follow you throughout the course and delay placement eligibility at many companies.
