Category abbreviations in Tamil Nadu
- OC: Open Competition / General — no reservation benefit
- BC: Backward Class — reservation applies
- BCM: Backward Class Muslim
- MBC/DNC: Most Backward Class / Denotified Communities
- SC: Scheduled Caste
- SCA: Scheduled Caste Arunthathiyar
- ST: Scheduled Tribe
How it affects cutoff
Each category has a reserved portion of seats in government and aided colleges. Because more seats are available relative to fewer eligible candidates in some categories, the effective cutoff needed in those categories is lower. OC candidates compete for all seats but only from the OC quota.
