How to Check if a Private Medical College Is NMC Approved in 2026

What is NMC recognition?
NMC (National Medical Commission) is the regulatory body for medical education in India. Only NMC-recognised colleges can produce doctors who are eligible to get licensed to practice in India.
How to check
- Go to nmc.org.in
- Click on Colleges or Medical Colleges in India
- Search by college name or state (Tamil Nadu)
- Check: Is your specific college listed? Is it for the current year?
What if the college is not listed?
Do not pay any fees until you get written confirmation from NMC or the college explains a valid reason. A degree from an NMC-unrecognised college cannot get you a medical license in India.
For dental colleges
The equivalent body is the Dental Council of India (DCI) — check dciindia.org.in for dental college recognition.
For foreign medical colleges (MBBS abroad)
Check the World Directory of Medical Schools (wdoms.org) AND the NMC India approved list. Both must show approval.
