FMGE and NExT 2026: Complete Guide for Foreign Medical Graduates
Published: 19 August 2026. Students who complete MBBS outside India must pass a licensing exam to practice medicine in India. This exam is now called NExT (National Exit Test). FMGE was the older name — many people still use both terms. This guide explains clearly.
What is NExT / FMGE?
NExT is the screening exam mandated by NMC (National Medical Commission) for graduates of foreign medical universities who wish to get a registration to practice in India. Without passing NExT, you cannot work as a doctor in India — even if your degree is genuine.
Historical FMGE pass rate
Historically, FMGE pass rates were around 15-30%. This means 7 out of 10 foreign MBBS graduates did not clear the exam on first attempt. The exact NExT pass rate for 2026 and beyond will become clear as data accumulates. This is the biggest risk of studying MBBS abroad.
How to prepare
- Study Indian MBBS curriculum (not just the foreign university textbooks)
- Use FMGE/NExT preparation books and coaching
- Attempt mock tests regularly
- Do not underestimate clinical knowledge sections
